SOCIS students

In this first year of ESA's Summer of Code in Space, we received 125 students applications for the 20 mentoring organizations that were selected to participate in the program. All mentoring organizations received at least 2 applications.

Each mentoring organization carried out internally an evaluation process, which produced a ranked list of applications for each organization.

So, without further ado, here is the list (in no particular order) of the selected students for this year's edition of SOCIS:

We would like to thank all the students that submitted project proposals and all the mentors and mentoring organization administrators that evaluated them.

The coding period starts today, August 1st, and will last until October 28. Initial students payments are expected at the end of August.

Happy coding to everyone!

Reminder: students application deadline tomorrow!

We would like to remind all interested students that the deadline for the application to SOCIS is tomorrow, July 27th, 11AM (UTC). In order to apply, select a project from the list of accepted mentoring organizations and fill out the application form for students.

The students application period starts today!

To submit your application to participate as a student to the Summer of Code in Space you will need to:

NOTE: The deadline for students applications has been extended to July 27, 11AM (UTC).

If you have any question, you can refer to the documentation center or write to the public SOCIS mailing list.

Selected mentoring organizations

For the first edition of SOCIS (2011) we received 32 applications from mentoring organizations. As this first edition of SOCIS is a pilot programme (and thus limited in funding) we preferred to include more organizations rather than assigning multiple slots. The following 20 organisations have thus been assigned 1 student slot each.

The selected organizations are (in random order):

ESA's Summer of Code in Space (SOCIS) has been launched! Check the release announcement on the ACT website.

Mentoring organizations can start applying now. The deadline for mentoring organizations is the 15th of July.

About SOCIS

ESA Summer of Code in Space (SOCIS) is a pilot program run by the Advanced Concepts Team of the European Space Agency that offers student developers stipends to write code for various space-related open source software projects. Through SOCIS, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers.

The program is inspired by (but not affiliated or related in any way to) Google's Summer of Code initiative, and has been designed with the following objectives in mind:

  • raise the awareness of open source projects related to space within the open source programming community, especially among students;
  • raise awareness of ESA within the open-source community;
  • improve existing space-related open-source software.

To learn more about the program, check out the timeline, visit out documentation center, or head to our mailing list.
