The announcement was officially made on the 18th of March 2015, and can be found\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sophia.estec.esa.int\/gtoc_portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/call_for_registration_GTOC8.txt\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a Nutshell<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The theme chosen for this competition is &#8220;high-resolution mapping of radio sources in the universe using space-based Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI)&#8221;. Three spacecraft depart from the Earth and need to perform interferometric measurements of\u00a0one of 420\u00a0radio sources. A measurement can be\u00a0made when the three spacecraft lie\u00a0on a plane whose normal points towards the radio source. (<a href=\"http:\/\/Petropoulos, Anastassios E. &quot;GTOC8: Problem description and summary of the results.&quot; 26th AAS\/AIAA Space Flight Mechanics Meeting. 2016.\" data-wplink-url-error=\"true\">pdf<\/a>)<\/div>\n<h5>Curiosities<\/h5>\n<p>The winning strategy from ESA\/JAXA was refined, in the months after the competition deadline, by one of the teams who reported, at the workshop in Napa, to have found a score of 158 MKm.<\/p>\n<p>Many teams adopted completely different strategies and yet scored similarly.<\/p>\n<p>The music synchronized with the\u00a0winning trajectory in the video released\u00a0by ESA&#8217;s ACT\u00a0after the competition ended, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=goeOUTRy2es\">Hungarian Raphsody No. 2<\/a> by Liszt.<\/p>\n<p>Anastassios Petropoulos designed and produced a beautiful trophy to award to the winning team.
